Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s drama Faust ranks among
the key works of world literature, and its representation in the fine arts also
constitutes an important chapter in the history of 19th-century art.
Illustrations for Faust were created both by artists whose fame has
endured to this day and by those who have fallen into oblivion – Peter von
Cornelius, Moritz Retzsch, Eugène Delacroix, Engelbert Seibertz, Gabriel von
Max and others. The cabinet will present selected illustrations from the
Collection of Prints and Drawings of the NGP in two variations.
