Arietis Sisters and the Sun is a performance by artists Miroslava Večeřová and Lucie Kordačová that interweaves choreography, the human voice, and other sounds in dialogue with artworks from the permanent exhibition of the National Gallery in Prague. It builds on an original site-specific performance created on the coastline of a seaside resort in East Sussex in southern England and moves into the interior of the gallery, where it works with the theme of water as a carrier of memory and a transformative force.
Four performers embody the stars of the constellation Aries, while a fifth performer, in the role of the Sun, enters the ritual by singing a folk song. The performance develops a cyclical conception of time, explores the relationship between the body and cosmic movement, and engages with contemporary ecofeminist perspectives. At the same time, it draws on the artists’ personal experiences of leaving their home country and of repeated returns, which—through the symbolism of the sun’s return—are reflected as a search for new forms of anchoring and relating to the world.
