A Q&A with the jury of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award
will offer visitors a rare look behind the scenes of how contemporary art is
evaluated. In conversation with CJCh curators Veronika Čechová and Tereza
Jindrová and jurors Denisa Bytelová, Hana Janečková and Marika Kupková you’ll
learn about the criteria guiding the jury’s selection, the different approaches
to assessing artistic practice, and how broader social and cultural contexts
are considered in the decision-making. The discussion will include time for
audience questions and provide insight into how this prestigious award—shaping
the Czech art scene for more than thirty years—takes form.
Marika Kupková is an educator, curator, and art
theorist whose interests lie in the institutional and cultural-political
dimensions of the art field. She focuses on researching curatorial practice
with regard to the evolving demands placed on its actors.
Hana Janečková is a curator, writer, and theorist
based at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Her work focuses on contemporary
art in the contexts of political ecology, technology, feminism, and critical
institutional practice. She curated the Czech representation at the 60th Venice
Biennale and is the author of the forthcoming book Beyond the Body: Feminist
Alliances in Contemporary Art (2026).
Denisa Bytelová is an educator, critic, theorist, and
curator of contemporary art. She is concerned with art whose associated mission
is to soften social relations. For more than two decades, she has developed a
collaboration with the artist Sráč Sam, with whom she has, among other things,
co-run the sam83 gallery program in Česká Bříza since 2006.
The
program will be held in Czech.
