Vincenc Morstadt (1802–1875) was a lawyer, and he devoted most of his life to the profession. It is therefore all the more admirable that he also became the greatest authority on 19th-century Bohemian veduta painting. We are indebted to Morstadt for his faithful depictions of Prague’s streets and panoramic views created before the invention and dissemination of photography. In his work, he combined minute detail with the expressed general atmosphere of a site. The Graphic Arts Cabinet features almost unknown works dating from the artist’s youth, which attest to his innate drawing mastery.
