The painter
and graphic artist Emil Orlik (1870–1932) created works for the theatre,
ranging from posters to the scenography for productions, and he was also
interested in the music scene. As an excellent portraitist, he often depicted
the prominent individuals that he met on the theatre stage and in concert halls
and with whom he collaborated. In addition to portraits of playwrights and
theatre directors (Henrik Ibsen, Max Reinhardt, Hermann Bahr), he portrayed
actresses and actors in their famous roles (Tilla Durieux, Emil Jannings,
Werner Krauss), as well as composers and conductors during concert performances
(Gustav Mahler, Selmar Meyrowitz).
