This year’s graduate exhibition therefore itself moves rather like a wave: between the future and past, between Internet and Baroque sensitivity. On the one hand it is an exhibition held today, which means in the world of the digital image, global problems and social networks, but on the other hand it seeks to formulate a coherent, tight perspective retaining traditional approaches and media. In the planning of the exhibition we made no attempt to obscure this tension, but on the contrary exploited it in conception and design. One of the main features is the use of textile for installation, information materials and captions; in adopting this approach we wanted to tackle the very complex spatial and institutional demands of the exhibition not by making compromises but in a form that is ambitious, aesthetic and perhaps a little Baroque. Our interest was not in reinforcing the boundaries of media, form and authorship. On the contrary we wanted to wave and fold the boundaries and lighten them up, by evoking the dualities of interior and exterior, subjective and objective, serious and airy.
The first section of the exhibition opens up to us through the glazed facade in the Korzo of the Veletržní Palace. The installation in the introductory section is orientated to figural themes and the medium of sculpture, and works with perspective and the arrangement of the individual works according to volume and degree of abstraction. On the first floor of the Korzo we find more nuanced paintings and prints – ordered at a lively spatial tempo – before we enter the corridor beyond the main assembly hall. The corridor contains works that were more technically demanding to install and intermedia works. Then we can progress through another glazed wall into Hall A with other paintings and restoration works. The highly subdivided third floor, once again framed by textile installations, keeps up an alternating rhythm of pictures, objects and presentations of architecture.
