Antonín Pelc – Artwork as a Mirror of History, Politics and Ideology

Project GAČR

Project GAČR – GAP409/12/0133

Investigator: PhDr. Anna Pravdová, Ph.D.

The project is aimed at detailed presenting the life and work of artist Anton__n Pelc (1895-1967). It will focus on interpreting Pelc in a wider context, while emphasis will be laid on following an artist's role in society and understanding the relation between art work and politics and ideology. Pelc, one of the most signicant Czech caricaturists, fundamentally inuenced the development of the given genre both in his homeland and abroad. His painting and drawing oeuvres, however, have hitherto been only little known. The submitted project will depart from detailed research of both primary and secondary sources and, primarily, Pelc's inheritance which is deposited in the National Gallery in Prague. His work will be interpreted via the most topical methods of art history and in the social and cultural context of the period of its origin. The main output of the project will be a monograph capturing all aspects of Pelc's protean work.
