The year 2014 marks the 450th anniversary of the death of Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the world’s most distinguished artists. This Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet created a body of work that is one of the peaks of Renaissance art. His originality and profound psychological insight opened the path to Mannerism and a modern conception of art. Ever new generations of artists have acknowledged the master’s legacy that, time and again, enraptures the viewer with the perfection of his sculptural skill, bravura and energy of his drawings, the airiness of his colour palette and the plain monumentality of his architecture. The wealth of his creative output was a source of inspiration to artists of the Renaissance and Baroque. The visual arts of the 19th century and subsequently many modern artists also paid homage to Michelangelo. This small exhibition commemorates the Italian master’s oeuvre through prints made by both his contemporaries and followers.
