Capitalism's modern thieves, depraved morality, the superficial glamour of nouveau riche society, the splendour and decline of courtesans, disabled war veterans and rotund officers, a dark city - these are just some of the themes running through the pointed and witty satire of Berlin-based artist Georg Grosz who commented on the raw character of the post-war world after 1918. Grosz, a member of the Dada group in Berlin, published his pictorial commentaries in the magazines "Bankruptcy" and "Bloody Strict". His work also influenced Czech artists. The Graphic Cabinet presents a cycle of his drawings that were distributed and published in Germany in extensive lithographic albums.
