Monumenta sepulcrorum

Curator: Blanka Kubíková

The album Monumenta sepulcrorum... represents extremely interesting evidence of the high standard of humanistic culture in Wroclaw in the second half of the 16th century. The work published by the Silesian painter and engraver Tobias Fendt in 1574 includes pictures of tombstones and epitaphs of famous personalities of classical Greek and Roman, mediaeval and Renaissance scholarship and monuments of legendary figures. The album is a tribute to the celebrated past, scholarship and audacity of spirit, but also reminds us that human existence is ephemeral.
