Dances and Festivities of the 16th - 18th Centuries
- Place: Waldstein Riding School (Contacts)
- Date: 15.12.2008 - 03.05.2009
- Type: Exhibition
Never before has an exhibition about dances and related festivals in art been mounted. The chosen time-frame, covering the Renaissance, Baroque and rococo periods, is most attractive in terms both of the development of the motif of dance in art and the dancing itself. Dance in its myriad types and forms is presented through a broad range of materials. Court dances, associated in particular with festivals such as masquerade balls, theatrical dance performances etc., are placed in deliberate contrast to rural dances such as those practiced at village fêtes. Paintings, musical instruments, costumes, theatre props, fans, graphic art, glass, porcelain, dance manuals and other contemporary prints are displayed. The exhibition is accompanied by a number of live performances in the exhibition hall and lectures including demonstrations of historical dance.
